Full description

Signed, stamped, hand titled, limited edition, mounted Giclee print of original illustration by Mark McPhelim.

Edition: /395

Sitting prominently to the east coast of mainland Scotland in the outer Firth of Forth, lies The Bass Rock. An uninhabited, extinct volcano which once housed a prison now serves as a bird reserve mainly to a large colony of gannets.

If you're familiar with 'the Bass', it's unique shape can dominate the skyline and the ever changing seasons, climate and weather means it never looks the same twice!

I was inspired by the distinctive angles to the rock face on the island. The bold, straight, geometric lines develop and continue onto the distant, heavy rainfall, the island's imposing shadow and, ultimately, the movement and ripple of the rugged waves.

The storm clouds also follow the rugged, granite-like strips of bold texture and movement while birds catch the wind stream and weave between the elements and rocks.

Bass Rock is a timeless icon and holds lots of fond memories for many of us. I hope this work captures something special to you.

To compliment 'East Rock', I've also completed 'West Rock', artwork of similar style to Bass Rock's sister island, Ailsa Craig.
