Brixton: the dynamic inner heart of urban South London. Home to Electric Avenue, birthplace of David Bowie. And TAMED HERE for your enjoyment!

This map of "Brixton Garden City" reimagines the community through the lens of the eponymous early 20th Century planning movement, whereby urban space was meticulously zoned and compartmentalised to achieve perfect, maximum bizarreness.

Drawing on inspiration from Ebenezer "Founder of Letchworth" Howard's famous turn-of-the-century designs, "Brixton Garden City" gives us an alternative vision of how vibrant inner cities might have become vast lunar colonies of the soul instead :)

This is a limited edition, signed A4 print on 200 gsm paper, and will be shipped in reinforced hardback envelope within three days.

Garden cities are simply amazing. Peaceable, sedate, wonderfully naive (and yes, a little bit totalitarian), the garden city movement imagined that the best of human nature could be coaxed out into the open through symmetrical urban planning. They tried to bring nature into urban spaces, but in just about the most inorganic way imaginable. Spacious yet oppressive, they are incredible contradictions - and they make beautiful (and even quite alien) maps.

It's hard to imagine some of our most vibrant, best-loved urban centres being reformed in this way, but that's just what I tried to do with this fantastical map. On balance, I think I like the real version best :)
