The paper stencil screenprint process involves cutting paper stencils that are used to mask the paper as each colour is laid down. Once a stencil is in place on top of the carefully positioned paper a very fine mesh screen is placed over the top and paint is spread across the uppermost surface of the mesh. A wooden block is then pushed up and down across the mesh to force the paint through the screen. The paint with go onto the paper except in areas where it has been masked by the stencil. The screen is lifted several times during this process to check the image until the desired amount of paint has come through. The screen is then lifted and cleaned before the next stencil is inserted and the next colour of paint is added. Great accuracy is required when cutting and positioning stencils to ensure that colours meet perfectly without overlapping or smudging. Images are left to dry for several days before wrapping. Each image is unique due to small variations in positioning, pressure applied and paint mix.
