I had successfully applied the mokume technique to one side of a vest top and to t shirts before, but I wanted to make a smarter mokume piece. I chose a kiwi colour polo as a base garment and applied yellow and cobalt blue dye to produce colours ranging from dark forest green to golden yellow.
As Mokume is a shibori technique that translates as "woodgrain", I was inspired to use colours that remind me of trees and fields. I was thinking of something I would like to wear myself. I love green colours and nature, so this colourway was one I felt captured the idea of trees and wild flowers, and looked good on a garment.
The work of preparing the polo took a great deal of time, but I think it's worth the effort for the bold pattern it gives. This is really a unique garment.
