Full description

Made with a heavily grogged, stoneware clay, this lidded container was first hand thrown on the wheel as a closed form. Once leather hard the lid was cut out and a separate inner rim thrown and joined on. The outside was then carved and scraped to give it an interesting surface texture. A shino glaze was applied to the interior and the jar fired to around 1270 degrees centigrade in a gas kiln. The piece was placed directly in the path of the burner flame, which has created some subtle variation in colour and the flame-side has a slightly shinier finish.

The shino glaze has split, crawled and peeled in a rather beautiful way, and as a result it is more of a decorative piece than functional .. it could be used to store certain things, but the glaze, where lifted, will snap if too much pressure is applied.

Height is approx. 4.25 inches and width a touch under 3 inches at its widest point. Carries Mark Smalley's personal symbol impressed to the underside.

Designed by Mark Smalley in Cheshire, England
