In years gone by Skeps were completed over the Winter in the home on long dark nights in preparation for the spring. Often a social occasion with one person preparing the materials and the Skep maker creating the skep. It is a process that is rarely seen these days as, modern bee-hives are designed to produce stronger stocks of bees and yield more honey.
However it is important to keep these traditional rural skills alive. They not only are part of our heritage but, teach us another way to live causing less harm to the environment and may be a provide answers to a more sustainable future.

This beautiful classic shaped skep is not just wonderful as a talking point in the home conservatory or garden. It can be used for Bee-keepers to practically house a stock of Bees.
Please bear in mind it will take 6-8 weeks for me to complete your skep.
This Straw bee-hive is hand made in the traditional medieval shape using coiled straw in a method called 'lippi' work. For centuries the art of coiling straw to create a 'Bee-Skep' or, to create baskets have been used. The 'skep's were also, used in the origins of Bee-keeping to catch swarms.
This craft has been handed to me by my father and I hope to pass on to my next generation.
For Beekeepers, Gardner's and lovers of nature everywhere. Made from British sustainable materials it is robust and can be placed inside or, outdoors.
