I like to find the beauty in the small, often overlooked aspects of nature. While spiders make me a little nervous I find their webs beautiful. I love autumn berries, they add a splash of colour to a hedgerow and I enjoy embroidering the shade and shine on their flesh.

Full description

Hand embroidered using fine silk floss thread on a silk/cotton blend fabric this original design of rosehips with a spider's web entwined is mounted in a silver tone brooch frame measuring 2.75 x 3.5cm.

The rosehip is the berry of the wild rose and is a familiar sight in the hedgerows during late August until November. Rosehips have been used in food for centuries but became popular during World War II when they were found to contain twenty times the vitamin c of oranges. Due to the rationing of citrus fruit people were encouraged to pick rosehips and use them in all kinds of dishes.

Rosehip syrup was made as a flavouring for deserts and making it was the simplest way of filtering out the prickly seed which can be a dangerous internal irritant.
