Taking a short break, back September 2025
I was lucky enough to be living in Kew 10 years ago when Dale Chihuly's outdoor glass works were installed at the Royal Botanic Gardens, and spent many very happy days visiting and revisiting his extraordinary works in this beautiful setting. This was also the year that I met my husband so most of those visits were made with him, and cemented a love of Chihuly's work as well as creating wonderful memories. My ring was inspired by the remarkable pieces suspended from the roof of the Palm House - fantastical discs of spun glass in reds, oranges and yellows, opaque in places, transparent in others and ruffled and rippled like delicate petals. I spent hours photographing them, and it's been lovely to relive that time and look through the pictures as I worked on this challenge.

Full description
A statement ring, a piece of wearable art made entirely from seed beads. The rope band encircles the finger, merges into one and then explodes into a ruffled disc, which moves with you, catching the light. I used just one beadweaving stitch - brick stitch, to create both the ring and disc in one continuous piece from around 1800 beads. The beads are Japanese Miyuki seed beads in the tiniest size 15 in a red-orange with an AB finish, blending out to sliver lined orange 15s, and then yellow- orange silver lined 11s for extra ping.
The ring has been designed to fit the middle finger rather than the ring finger because of the size of the ruffled disc, so is a UK size T. It can also be worn suspended from a ribbon or a chain as a pendant. The disc measures 45mm, and the ruffle stands around 25mm from the finger (tricky to measure as you can move the ruffles), and the ring weighs 9 grams. It will be packaged in a lovely gift box made from recycled materials ready for you to give or enjoy yourself, and will be sent Royal Mail Recorded Delivery because of its value.
