This unusual cup was thrown off the hump, and once leatherhard, coated with a thick white clay slip. This was allowed to dry before a scraffito tool was used to incise the decoration. The white slip over the dark clay gives the cool, green glaze an extra level of depth and character, rather like traditional earthenware pieces. The interior is much darker as the green glazes lies directly on the red clay. The cup was fired to about 1270 degrees centigrade and due to the high wood ash content, the Oribe glaze has developed a pronounced crackle effect.
The piece measures approx. 2.75 inches tall and just under three inches across at the widest point. Mark Smalley's impressed, personal symbol is clearly visible under the glaze.
Postage and packing for this item will be at a fixed cost of £3.00 for delivery within the UK.
