A visit from my 5yr old niece gave me the perfect excuse to watch one of my favourite films again, A Dolphin's Tale! We had already been experimenting that morning making her a rainbow name panel using the kiln carving technique, but watching the movie gave me the idea to create an image of the dolphin jumping from the sea and capture it in glass. With the perfect blue glass in my supply cupboard, I got to work and this is the result.

Full description

This 16cm square plate has been made with hand cut glass and features a dolphin jumping out of the waves of the sea using the kiln carving technique. Having cut the glass and created the dolphin design, the glass is slowly heated to 800 degrees Celsius to allow the two sheets of glass to fuse together and form over the image. It is then left to slowly cool including an annealing process to strengthen the glass. Having spent 11 hours in the kiln for this process it is then carefully re-fired to 670 degrees to slump over a mould to form the shape of the plate. Again, the glass is put through an annealing process to ensure its strength before cooling overnight and being taken out of the kiln.
