So what is 'Bog Oak'? Here's a history lesson from our resident woodturner...

For thousands of years the fens (an area North of Cambridgeshire) were covered with forests. About 6000 years ago, when Britain was in the middle of an ice age. At this time a great storm most likely broke the trees down and there they laid, slowly sinking into the peat beneath the ice. By the time the ice melted, the remains of all these trees were submerged under water in the peat, which preserved them to this day.

In the mid 1600's, Vermuyden, a Dutch engineer set about draining the Fens to reclaim the rich peaty soil that lay beneath the black waters. As the peat dried out it also began to shrink, but more than that without the water to bind it, it would blow away forming great dust clouds - what we call today a 'fen blow'., and so the preserved trees re-emerged from their watery resting places.
