This rhino has been very long in the making. Off course the labour of making him has taken a long time but I've also had long periods of just staring at him.

First big question was what to mount him on. I did not want him on a hunter's shield because I think it would look revolting. A piece of natural wood would've had to be huge and felt wrong too. And I didn't want him on a fabric covered backing either. Eureka moment was the decision to have him just coming out from the wall.

The second long period was hard to snap out of. He was almost finished but didn't feel right as I don't want a hunting trophy of a rhino on my wall. Or anyone else's wall! So I asked my following of lovely people on my Facebook page what they thought I should do. I had lots of suggestions of flowers, hats, pipe etc but when one lady said 'bird' I was so happy I couldn't sleep. The wee colourful bird make this piece. It brings it from a trophy to a lovely piece of textile art. I hope you like him. x

Full description

This rhino is the largest and most detailed piece I've made and he's been a labour of love! He is a handmade one of a kind piece of textile art and would be a fantastic statement in any room. He is coming out from the wall as I did not want to mount him on a hunter's shield and he has a wee colourful bird friend as a sign of hope.

He is made from a luscious grey wool and stuffing. Shape and wrinkles are hand stitched. His eyes are glass. The ears are wired slightly but also starched so they stand. His horns are cotton that I have stained, painted and starched.

The wee fantasy bird of hope I made from linen materials, glass eyes, paint and feathers. He has tiny wire feet.

The rhino measures about 45cm from chin to top of front horn. 48cm from wall to top lip and 60cm from top of neck to lip. I have added a photo from the making of him with me in it so you can get a feel of his size. He is lovely!

Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for looking!
