Full description

This interesting cup was initially thrown "off the hump" using a buff stoneware clay, and once leather hard, it was decorated using two layers of clay slip. After the first, dark layer had been added, an abstract pattern was scratched through the surface to the paler clay beneath. Then it was dipped in a white slip, which allows the iron colours to burn through in places where it lies thinner. The shape was distorted slightly while the clay was still damp, creating three slightly rounded sides .. shallow impressions were also made on each side with the thumb and these can provide some extra grip when holding it. Inside a swirling spiral of iron oxide has been painted from the centre all the way up to the rim.

After a bisc firing, the cup was glazed with a transparent ash glaze and finally fired in a wood kiln to around 1300 degrees centigrade.

The foot ring was carved by hand with the roughened clay on the underside left to give a natural, rock-like effect.

The piece is just over three inches tall and approx. 2.75 inches in diameter at its widest point. Mark Smalley's personal symbol has been impressed inside the footring.

There is a very small, surface firing crack to the underside, which is perfectly stable and does not go through to the inside.

Postage and packing for delivery within the UK will be at a fixed cost of £2.90.
