Additional terms
NB that these cards may show some spots of colour from strayed stencils or ink. These should not be taken as faults but rather as evidence of the hand made process. Cards in the 17th century were not long lasting, and play will lead to wear. They are not intended as toys and should be kept away from babies and young children.

Full description
These playing cards are made entirely by hand and are an earlier version of my historic playing cards. The figures are a bit more rustic and the paper used is less durable, hence the lower price.
The pattern used is known as "Rouen II" , Rouen being the town which exported cards to England pre-1628. They are printed using a reproduction wooden press from a hand carved pearwood block. The card used is Fabriano Rosaspina, a printmaker's paper. The court card are then stencilled with four colours in turn, using a mixture of watercolour and starch. The pips are stencilled on with printing ink. When dry, the cards are rubbed with dry soap to improve the handle, then cut and packed . The cover of the pack is also hand printed. Finally the pack is bound with linen string and the knot secured with sealing wax.
