Created from felted merino and hand formed, this is a piece that is completely original and unique.

Built up with layers of fleece wrapped around a circular piece of foam, to prevent it from becoming a solid piece. The colours which form the inside of the bowl are laid out first and are therefore overlaid on top of each other becoming invisible as more fleece is added.

Once all is in place, the fleece is wet felted together. Once connected sufficiently a hole is cut and the foam removed. The opening up of the felt half way through is always a moment of tension, has the felt come out as envisaged, is it in the right place. The felting process and rinsing process now continues until the bowl has reached the desired consistency. I then free form the bowl until it is the shape I want. Once air dried into this shape it will retain it.

The finished piece is a lovely tactile thing, about the size of your average fruit bowl. The colours have melded together becoming the sum of the whole rather than in isolation. This is part of the magic of felting and part of the skill of the maker is to be able to envisage the completed work when laying out the individual colours.
