Fact or Fiction?
I make these from borosilicate glass in my home studio by the sea in Pembrokeshire, melting and shaping in a gas/oxygen flame, then annealing many hours in a computer controlled electric kiln for strength and stability. Boro is harder to work than standard soda-lime glass, requiring more heat and more patience, but the finished pieces are stronger, with rich colours that shift and change according to the angle and intensity of the light. They love sunshine!
Fiction or Fact?
A rare sub-species of the famous Welsh dragon (y Ddraig Goch) is the Skomer Stormlizard - found only along the Pembrokeshire coast, chiefly on the islands of Skomer, Skokholm and Gateholm. In addition to its normal eggs, this dragon produces small, unfertilised, jewel-like eggs, apparently as playthings for its young. The adult dragons appear to confer little value on these (much preferring human made trinkets of gold and silver) so once the young have flown the nest the eggs are simply abandoned. They are collected by a team of highly trained choughs and sold to raise funds for dragon research and conservation work.
