Full description

This large cup or yunomi would be very nice to use for green tea but would happily serve as a vessel for beer or fruit juice. It stands approx. 4.25 inches tall and approx. 3.75 inches diameter at the mouth, so it will hold quite a large amount of liquid.

The dark brown glaze is completely natural, being made purely from an earthenware slip dug straight from the Cambridgeshire fens. Fired to over 1300 degrees C in a wood kiln, it forms a glaze with a surface texture quite similar to Tenmoku, with subtle variations in colour. There is also a small area of golden speckles where melted fly ash has landed on the pot..

The piece was hand thrown on the wheel and distorted when leather hard .. a few subtle lines of decoration have been incised into the surface. The foot was carved by hand and Mark Smalley's personal seal has been impressed to the centre of the foot ring.

(The tiny bit of wadding stuck to the footring and shown in the second photo has now been removed.)

Postage and packing for this piece will be at a fixed cost of £3.90.

Designed by Mark Smalley in Cheshire, england
