Full description

This robust and ancient looking cup was thrown on the wheel and then shaped by hand. When leather hard, the surface was deliberately scraped, incised and distressed to give it a natural, rock-like texture.

It was glazed fired twice, once in a wood kiln and again in a gas-and-wood kiln, with raw ash applied to the surface of the pot. This wood ash has melted in places to form a wonderful, green glaze which has run down the sides to form two attractive drips on the bottom edge. The cup actually rests on the drips but it still has a very stable stance. Some of the ash on the front has only partially melted, giving a rough, grey texture which adds an extra dimension to the character of the piece. Inside there is alot of interesting iron spotting and a pool of dark, almost black ash glaze in the bottom.

In keeping with its rock-like appearance, the cup has been made deliberately heavy for its size at 470 grams. It measures approx. 3.25 inches tall by 2.75 inches wide at the middle section. Bears Mark Smalley's personal symbol impressed to the underside.

Postage and packing for this item will cost £4.00 for Royal Mail second-class recorded delivery.
