Full description

This beautiful bottle vase or container was the best piece to come out of a recent firing using gas and wood to reach a blistering temperature of 1290 degrees centigrade. The piece was hand thrown on the wheel and after bisquing to 1060 centigrade, a Japanese shino-type glaze was added, followed by a layer of raw wood ash. It is the raw wood ash which has created the amazingly variegated surface, with glassy dribbles, semi-melted ash deposits and micro crystals. It is difficult to show the wonderful details in the photographs as this is a pot which rewards close inspection.

It was fired on clam shells to allow the rivulets of green, melted ash to run underneath the pot without sticking it to the kiln shelf, and this has created some interesting effects on the base too. The vase stands approx. 5 inches tall and carries Mark Smalley's personal symbol impressed to the underside.

It will hold water and could be used to display fresh flowers.

Postage and packing within the UK will be at a fixed cost of £4.00.

Designed by Mark Smalley in Cheshire, england
