Full description

This unusual tea caddy has been painstakingly crafted by carving the form from a solid block of clay.

A large lump of clay is left to dry for several days and once firm, the outside shaped by cutting and scraping the clay. After carefully slicing the form in half, the most difficult part begins, which is slowly hollowing out the inside. Achieving a consistent thickness of the walls is critical, otherwise the piece is very likely to crack in the firing. Finally, an inner rim is added by hand, and shaped so that the lid is a good fit.

A white, dolomite glaze has been used on the bottom section, making it completely food safe. The rest of the piece is glazed with an ash glaze which cracks and curls where thicker. Please note that this type of "tree-bark" glaze is not as robust as a shiny, glassy glaze and requires fairly gentle handling, especially since it has been glazed on the underside as well. It was fired to around 1260 degrees centigrade in an oxidising atmosphere.

The piece measures approx 4 inches tall and 3 inches wide. It is unmarked, so a signed certificate of authenticity can be provided.

Postage and packing for this piece is at a fixed cost of £4.00 within the UK.
