Full description

This characterful and rustic stoneware jar was hand thown on the wheel as a closed form. Once leather hard, the lid was cut off, the base trimmed and the knob fashioned and carved separately. After the bisque firing, a traditional, Japanese shino glaze was applied to the inside and the piece was fired in a wood kiln to around 1280 degrees centigrade. The interior glaze is perfectly food safe.

The white-hot flames and ash on their own have produced a lovely lustrous finish on the outside, while the glaze inside has turned a very pale shade of orange-pink. There is also some pleasant iron specking in the shino.

The walls of this piece have been thrown quite thickly to allow for the lid being cut out and there is some slight unevenness to surface and edges due to large particles of grog in the coarse clay. It measures approx. 5 inches tall and just over 3.5 inches wide. Weight is approx. 510 grams. Mark Smalley's personal symbol is impressed to the base.

Postage and packing is at a fixed cost of £4.00.
