Paua is the Maori name for a marine gastropod also known as abalone or 'Sea Opal'. To the Maori, paua are recognised as treasure, valued both as seafood and as a resource for traditional arts and crafts. Paua are frequently used to represent the eyes in Maori carvings and are traditionally associated with the stars - the symbolic eyes of ancestors that gaze down from the night sky. A blue 'eye' can be seen in this pendant.

This pendant features a natural paua shell cabochon, 2.5 x 1.8cm, set in an open-backed sterling silver setting.
New Zealand paua shells are prized in jewellery making because of their striking blue, green, and purple iridescence.
The silver setting has been polished to a high shine and the pendant will be supplied with a sterling silver trace chain (16in or 40cm) and bail. It will be packaged in an attractive gift box and despatched to you by first class post.
