One of the most interesting pieces I've ever made. This gnarly guinomi or sake cup was hand thrown and distorted on the wheel. After several days drying, the leatherhard clay was carved into this unusual and dynamic form. It was first glazed and fired to cone 10 in a saggar (a sealed container) with charcoal and banana skins. It has then been fired twice more to cone 10, the third time with a coating of raw oak ash, which has run down the sides, creating the most amazing array of subtle iron-based colours.
This guinomi bears the scars from over 50 hours of firing and I really like the distressed surface and the contrast of colours and textures this has created. Not everyone's cup of sake perhaps, but nonetheless, a piece with great character and presence which is very pleasant to hold in the hand.
Measures just over 3 inches tall and just over 2.5 inches wide. Carries Mark Smalley's personal symbol impressed clearly to the underside.
UK postage and packing for this item will be at a fixed cost of £2.90.
