Here is a very unusual sake cup which has been fired in a wood kiln to around 1300 degrees centigrade. The piece was hand-thrown and altered on the wheel, creating this unique form which bends forward slightly, as if bowing to the user. Not the easiest cup to drink from perhaps, but I feel this is part of its special appeal and character.
It was glazed with an orangey-brown shino and the ash and flames have left their marks, especially on the rim and inside the cup. As is tradition with many Japanese potters, fingermarks have been left to show the moment when the pot was dipped in the glaze.
It measures just under 3 inches tall and carries Mark Smalley's personal symbol, impressed to the underside. I try to photograph all pieces as accurately as possible, but please bear in mind that colours may vary slightly under different lighting conditions.
UK postage and packing for this item will be at a fixed cost of £2.90 for economy delivery. Overseas customers are very welcome, please contact me for a personalised shipping quotation.
