The title ‘Unheimlich’ comes from the essay by Freud of the same title. Whilst developing and researching this body of work I came across this essay which explores the unheimlich or uncanny aspect of the world. After considering my first test pieces I began to realise that they seemed to evoke a sense of the uncanny; the juxtaposition of the fluid thrown forms and the precise cast additions seemed to be incongruous to each other.

I began to exaggerate this incongruity by making the thrown forms more fluid, almost on the point of collapse, so they seemed to be completely removed from the design of the additions. The difference between the soda fired decoration and the highly polished gold also contributed to the divide.

I want these objects to evoke the same sense of the uncanny that I first felt, and still feel, when removing them from the kiln and holding them in my hands.

Full description

This is a wood fired, stoneware, soda glazed mug with gold lustre detail. It was hand thrown on the wheel and then slip cast additions were added. The idea for this piece was to combine loose fluid throwing with contrasting baroque detailing to give the piece an uncanny beauty.

It is approximately 10x8cm.

Due to the hand-made nature of the pieces they may differ slightly from the photograph shown.
