'Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space...' - Douglas Adams.
This book is my visual attempt to do justice to Douglas Adams' words and the hugeness of our Solar System!
I have always read books and articles explaining how big the Solar System is through various metaphors ('if the Sun was as big as an Orange, Earth would be a pinhead x metres away' etc). Whilst these metaphors do help the reader understand, I have always thought that it is one thing to read about metaphors but another to actually be able to recreate one yourself.
After learning a bookbinding technique that allows pages to be removed and replaced at will, I realised I had a way in which to recreate a scale model of the Solar System and 'Pocket Orrery' is the result!
