I wanted to get a sense of 3D knitted folds which could somehow be pulled & manipulated to give a feeling of origami paper folding. By using only two basic knit structures- purl stitches & plain stitches, I started to work on my design using the natural characteristics of both types of stitches, working in an antagonistic harmony to force one stitch forward & to regress in the other & vice versa. The result, after many attempts & trials, I managed to get the result I wanted- the Origami Scarf Design was born!
The result is a beautiful, 3-dimensional, textured fabric which moves as the wearer moves.
Yarns used: The design can be knitted in UK four ply 100% merino wool (not photographed), or finer 2/30s 100% merino wool as photographed. I use wool because of it's inherent stretch & the ability to hold it's own in a textured fabric such as purl & plain. This is the fibre I recommend using for the scarf. It is available in beautiful colours from Yeoman Yarn's 4 ply Merino Sport or Uppingham Yarn's 2/30s Harmony (they both ship world wide from UK) in colour Electric. The images on the mannequin is the finer 2/30s merino from Italy (Uppingham have a quality called Harmony which is the same count & fibre).
4ply version measurements are: 172 cm long by 24cm wide & weighs 381 grams You will need 1 cone of Merino Sport to complete the version.
The finer version (on mannequin) measurements are: 304cm long by 17cm wide & weighs 200gms so you will need the 250gm cone size to knit this 4ply version. This scarf (pictured) is 3000 rows to knit this length, but you can knit a much shorter version of about 2m in length if you prefer & the 4ply version is much less rows to knit at a looser tension.
