Full description

This transformable piece—worn as a brooch or a pendant—is born from a journey to the gemstone heart of Sri Lanka. It carries the weight of a profound contrast.

Its creation began with a confrontation: witnessing the ancient, perilous labour of gem extraction, where brave individuals work in the shadow of collapsing earth for low reward. It is a reality unchanged for centuries, a stark whisper behind the brilliance of the stones we cherish.

On a final, quiet morning, the island offered a different gift—moonstones and other gems, freely scattered on the beach by the tide. These, gathered by hand and carried back to my studio in the UK, became the soul of this work. Cut and polished by hands, they are the island’s natural tears, found without cost or risk.

The Design: A Dialogue Between Nature and Human Endeavour

The sculpted silver frame represents rough, controlling structures of human industry—the mines and mechanisms that seek to harness the earth’s treasures.

From this structure, holding dead Maurititian coral, tears of Sri Lancan moonstones roll and they are crowned in the bottom by shine of cubic zirconia. They are the poignant result of our pursuit: the ecological cost, the warming planet, the fading reefs, and the enduring disparity borne by the land and its people.

"Tears of the Island" is a wearable meditation on this cycle. It reflects how we transform raw nature, through the craft, into objects of spar
