"Mil engyl a Melangell

Trechant lu fyddin y fall."

Melangell with a thousand angels

Triumphs over all the powers of evil.

"Inspired by the legend of Saint Melangell, protector of hares. Melangell fled to the Tanat Valley in Wales after escaping an arranged marriage. It was here in the heart of the Berwyn mountains she remained, living in solitude for 15 years in a small cave before being discovered by Prince Brochwel a lord of Powys who was out coursing for hares with his dogs. The legend tells how the hare desperate to escape the hunt raced to Melangell and hid beneath her skirts... there is more to the tale and I am indeed writing it. This painting will be in my book when it is finally published.

In the old Welsh calendars St Melangell was commemorated on January 31st & May 4th but those dates appear to be lost to time and replaced with 27th January .
