I've wanted to make a Dala horse for a long time but couldn't think of a way to make it free standing without using lots of clay! Then inspiration hit and I added little 'hoof wedges'! I deliberately kept the carving and design simple as I love the raw honesty of naive folk art.

Embrace the simple life and traditional folk decor with my tactile naive folk art Swedish Dala horse. Hand carved and hand painted in stormy blue. Free standing thanks to his little wedges!
Traditionally, these distinctive shaped horses have been carved in various sizes by Swedish craftsmen and take their name from the province of Dalarna where is has been a popular form of domestic art since the 1840s.
The first Dala Horses were plain wood, created as toys for children. A hundred years later, they took on brighter colors and kurbit (flower-patterned) saddle and harness designs.
As with most of my work, this piece is a one off and you will receive the exact horse shown in the photos.
