I spent many childhood holidays walking along this bit of track which runs directly between the sea and the iconic red sandstone cliffs. We used to stay in Dawlish Warren and then in the evening walk along the tracks to Dawlish, have a drink, and then walk back in the dark with some chips. One year we stayed in Cornwall instead but we took one of these exact trains and I got to experience this track by train instead. Happy memories, fortunately we didn’t see a Kraken…

This train still holds the world speed record for a diesel train carrying passengers, in 1985 one of them recorded speeds of 144mph. Sadly these trains no longer run on this line, and the last one was taken out of service in 2019, but there are still some around on the network.
