The Legend of St Hilda:
Snakestones originated in the 7th Century when a high ranking Northumbrian woman called Hilda was given the task of building an abbey on the Whitby headland. Before she could do this, she had to rid the land of snakes that had taken over the land. Legend has it that she cast them into the sea and thus the legend of the snakestone was born.
