I captured this scene standing high up in Nothe Gardens, looking down over the historic Stone Pier and out across Weymouth Bay, because this vantage point has been admired for centuries as one of the most spectacular panoramas in Dorset. From the top of the gardens you can see the jetty stretching into the sea at the harbour entrance, a structure whose earliest form dates back to at least the 17th century and was extended over time to protect vessels and welcome visitors to this classic seaside town. Nothe Gardens themselves were laid out in the late 19th century on a promontory that once formed part of coastal defences, and today the lawns and winding paths offer a peaceful outlook over the bay, the harbour and beyond — a view that has drawn locals and holidaymakers alike to pause, admire and remember Weymouth’s rich maritime and leisure heritage.
