I captured this photograph of Weymouth Seafront Beach to reflect both the timeless beauty of its golden sands and the rich layers of history that have shaped this iconic Dorset shoreline. During World War II, the seafront and promenade played a very different role to the holiday scene we know today — with much of the beach cleared of bathing machines and civilian visitors once Britain declared a defence area, as military activity took over and troop embarkations for D‑Day preparations became part of the town’s daily life. After the war, as peace returned, Weymouth’s charming Esplanade and sweeping beach gradually evolved back into a beloved seaside resort, with promenade walks, beach huts and family leisure replacing the sounds of wartime operations. I like to look at scenes like this and think about what has changed? How has this part of the seafront changed since the war?
