The inspiration for this print is the sunlight sliding through the Holm Oak trees in the Overcliff gardens where I walk my dog. I was drawn to the strong contrast and the horizontal lines caused by the shadows.
I love the offset pressing as it allows the under layer of yellow to shine a lit edge on the dark outlines. It was a technique I started experimenting with after looking at the wood cut prints of Paul Gauguin.

Full description
Sidelight is an offset wood cut print, which means it is printed twice so that the colour from the first print shadows the darker top print.
On this print the under layer is in a rich cadmium yellow and the top print is shaded in deep purples and greens.
I use oil based, water washable inks for depth of colour and fineness of finish and Sumi-e Japanese paper. A paper that is light but strong enough to take the multiple pressings.
With this pressing and these colours there are 5 prints available, all signed and numbered. As each is a uniquely hand-printed there are slight variations between each print.
The print size is 28x28cm and comes mounted to fit into a standard 16"x16" (40.5x40.5cm) frame.
It will be sent flat, wrapped in cellophane and sandwiched between reused cardboard.
