I live in a land of rivers - the Tweed, the Teviot, the Till, the Whiteadder, the Blackadder... a haven for herons. As numerous as they are, their wariness of humans, their prehistoric looks and their improbable nesting at the very tops of the very tallest trees means that every chance encounter provokes an intake of breath, a moments pause, to stand, stare and wonder, before the spell is broken and they shuffle their feathers, turn their backs in disdain and rise regally to the skies to seek their solitude.
