We moved into our current house in 2022, and it needed a full refurbishment — still does, in fact! As part of the overhaul, we had a new central heating system installed, which meant the old hot water cylinder had to go. Rather than send it off for scrap, I decided to keep it, thinking I could turn it into something useful. I went through a few ideas, but they all centered around one concept: creating a unique pet bed.

Full description
Handcrafted in Falkirk from an upcycled copper hot water cylinder, this custom pet pod is both a functional bed and a statement piece of art. Suitable for a cat (of any size!) or a small dog, it offers comfort and character.
The pod is made from 100% solid copper, featuring a Perspex viewing window sealed into one end. The original bottom of the cylinder was removed and replaced with 8mm Perspex, creating a cozy, enclosed retreat. The main entrance has smooth, hand-sanded edges for safety, and the original hot water outlet has been reworked into a 22mm copper carry handle.
Adding to its charm is the sculptural stand — crafted from the original internal heater coil, carefully reshaped and soldered into curved legs that elevate the pod with style and stability.
Inside, you’ll find a bespoke teal cushion made to perfectly fit the space. The cover is made from 100% natural cotton and is machine washable. The cushion is generously filled with duck feathers for maximum comfort.
All metal surfaces have been polished and sealed with lacquer to preserve the finish, though copper will naturally age over time — and can be polished again if you prefer that fresh shine.
