I have spent a long long time in India, and I got to know many elephants as some of the nature reserves still have domestic elephants. These were wild forest elephants coming out for water, and I felt there was something both beautiful and poignant about this photograph of them disappearing into the distance, because they are so endangered, and still so terribly abused when taken from the wild and made to spend their lives in a temple, or half starved in a city like Delhi, being used as 'begging elephants

Full description
I have travelled extensively in India for long periods of time, and am the author of TIGER, a natural and cultural history of this supreme predator. (published by Reaktion and translated into Chinese, Italian, Russian, Arabic and more.)
I spent many months in wildlife reserves or rural India and took tons of photographs of this vibrant and colourful land. (Some were included in Tiger.)
This photograph was taken in Southern India during the dry season. The elphants usually live in the forest, but during the dry season they are driven out by the need for water and make thier way to this reservoir.
