The inspiration for the lilies was a profound connection to nature, born out of a constant battle with weeds in my tiny back garden. This struggle sparked a what-if scenario, where beautiful flowers such as lilies could grow like weeds, creating these unique pieces.

Full description

This handmade fused glass lily was one of 56 I made for my end-of-degree show for my BA(HONS) in glass at the University of Sunderland based at the National Glass Centre. Just over half of these were wafer-thin and unable to be sold due to being very fragile; the remainder were more robust. I made some of these in threes, but the finished lilies may be similar. However, they were never identical due to the nature of fused glass. But some were one-of-a-kind pieces. They were made using sheet glass, such as transparent or opaline, by hand cutting them into petal shapes, and details were added with glass powders. Due to the size of my kiln, I fired only one lily at a time. And each one took four firings to add the ail and shape. Stamens were made for each lily from glass stringers and small transparent glass pieces. Each one assembled and then slumped into shape. These were then glued into the centre for added detail. Then, each has a wall mount fitting glued to the back for displaying on a wall. Each lily measures approximately 25cm x25cm x 9cm and is in a handmade box for easy transportation and with its certificate of authenticity.
