The step up stool is a ubiquitous piece of furniture, a design classic. I wanted to make something very similar, just as useful, more solidly built and just that bit nicer.

This is a custom-made item and cannot be returned unless faulty.

Please note that if your order is being posted outside mainland UK, you (or the recipient) may have to pay customs or VAT charges and a handling fee. The seller is not responsible for any charges or fees that may incur.

Full description

Based upon a flat-pack classic, our Step Stool provides all the practicality of the original but adds traditional joinery, characterful hardwood and naturally formed shapes to provide a unique piece of quality furniture you’ll be proud to have on show rather than hide away in a utility cupboard.

Our Step Stool is made from specially selected hardwoods that we have milled and seasoned ourselves. There are no ugly metal fittings, just some rather elegant solid brass screws on the underside.

We use solid Beech staves for the mortice and tenon jointed frame, often with gloriously characterful spalting or flame features.

For this one the top and step are made from oak The top came from a tree that was felled to make way for a new kitchen extension and the other was hanging over a road and at imminent risk of collapse. The waney edges of both trees have been used to showcase the timber's natural shape making each stool truly unique.

These stools are perfect for reaching that top shelf, for an extra space at the table or for kids that need a bit of a hand to reach a kitchen worktop.

As for the name: Hwylus. It means handy in Welsh, a bit like Bekväm in Swedish

The Stool is 520mm high, 450mm wide and 400mm deep. But allow a little either way as it is a handmade item.
