I was inspired to try to capture this monument because of the history behind this impressive work, and stands as a monument to local workers.

Full description

The painting depicts the historic monument . The Fyrish monument has a very interesting history. It was built in 1782 at a dark time for Scottish Farm workers called the Clearances, this entailed the forced removal from lands of people to allow for the grazing of sheep.

Most of the people removed had very little if any means of earning money to feed and clothe their families.Survival was a very real problem, so , for some workers to remain in gainful employment the then Sir Hector Munro 8th Lord of Novar ordered the monument to be built, it was even said that, in order the lengthen the time the men were in paid employed, Hector would roll suitable stones down the hill to lengthen the time it took to build it.

It is located off the A9 north of Inverness and can be accessed by an approximate 2 hour walk up the hill to reach it.

Designed by Tom and Carole Scorer in Thurso, Highlands, Scotland
