Boulder Opals formed Around 80 million years ago during the Cretaceous period. They occur as thin Veins of opal within cracks of rocks after these mixed with Water .when silica rich water seeps into cracks and cavities within the host rock.(usually ironstone or Sandstone)over millions of years the silica rich solution slowly evaporates and solidifies depositing tiny spheres of silica Gel.These sheres are responsible for the opals ability to difract light and create the mesmerising play of colours. The presence of ironstone or Sandstone provides a stable matrix that help protect delicate Opal layers.
Boulder Opal is Often cut with a thin layer of the host rock left on the back of the Gemstone, Enhancing its natural allure & appearance. In summary Boulder Opal is a unique Gemstone that showcases the natural fusion of precious Opal & its host rock resulting in captivating and distinctive patterns , Its origins ,cutting styles & appearance make it a sought after Gemstone
