This is a raku ceramic bowl, a handmade raku pot for home decor. An ideal fine art gift for a discerning relative or friend. Raku firing is an ancient Japanese ceramics technique that has been used for many centuries to create a unique finish.

The bowl was created by wheel throwing, bisque firing, and then decorating with underglazes, glazes, and oxides. The vessel was taken from 2nd firing while it was glowing red hot and was then placed on combustible materials, for this peice were straw and sawdust. The vessel was starved of oxygen, which creates a myriad of colours within the glaze and then quenched in water.

The finish for this piece is grey on the inside, turquoise, and cobalt blue with an antiquated and rustic crackle finish. A Raku firing creates unique pieces as there is no certainty as to how the final piece will turn out. Raku essentially creates a unique design every time and is a time-consuming and high-risk process with many failures.
