I learned how to weave this particular basket from Irish Basketmaker Hanna Van Aelst. I grow twenty varieties of willow on our croft on the Isle of Skye and weave the beautiful rods into baskets. The whole process is extremely rewarding and nourishing; beginning with planting willow beds during Winter, tending the beds over the growing season, harvesting the rods in mid-winter, drying, sorting and grading the rods in Springtime, selecting rods for a new project each week, soaking the willow for right amount of time, and finally after a long preparation time, weaving the rods into beautiful everyday items that will be used for years to come.
For me, the Willow rods are a beautiful gift from Mother Nature. I feel connected to the land here, the seasons, and a long history of willow workers. The willow pushes back, and you have to listen to it and its limitations. That is why each basket presents a new challenge and is unique and special. I love growing baskets.

Full description
Woven by hand here at our croft in the Isle of Skye during October 2023, using both Scottish Willow grown here in Skye, and willow grown in Somerset. Each basket I make is individual depending on the willow I have available at the time. This basket features a double French Rand weave in two colours, one of which is the beautiful Flanders Red willow grown here on our croft.
The oval base is 31x21cm
The full height of the basket including the handle is 43cm
The depth of the basket part is 20cm
The width of the basket at the widest part is 48x29cm
The handle and foot can be replaced in time if the basket becomes worn through use. This basket will completely biodegrade at the end of its life.
