An old tree often has a wart like growth on the trunk. This is usually where the tree has been damaged in the past and is a bit like scar tissue. Inside, the normally even grain of the wood becomes random and various, this can create fascinating and beautiful patterns in the wood.
Burrs are coveted by many wood workers and are increasingly rare.
