Thank you for shopping with us.
I love baskets and for me it feels so lovely to have a good basket to carry when I go shopping - not just carrier bags.
Round shopping baskets are usefu and common, but actually oval or rectangular shapes are more comfortable as they sit better against the side of the body when being carried.
Round baskets are the first that you make when you start to learn. Oval shapes are more complex and while I have worked with this shape for a while, I set 2023 as the year to improve my skills and techniques.
I have wanted to make this curved shape oval basket for a while. The first I made was in white willow - this second one is slightly larger and in a relatively rare willow variety called Old French.
I love the whole process of basketmaking, from carefully selecting the materials, soaking and mellowing it ready to weave, working with different designs and patterns and seeing the end product walking off to a new home.

A beautifully shaped oval shopping basket woven from Old French willow variety. The raised ends create a softened shape while the simple side weaving pattern and sturdy handle give it a look of practicality.
Hand-woven in my small workshop in Cornwall from willow grown in Somerset.
Base & top 33cmsx22cms; height to handle 25cms; end height 29cms; height to top of handle 38cms;
The ‘Old French’ variety used in this basket may have been brought over from France as the name suggests. It is relatively rare in the UK, although one of my main suppliers seems to be trying to reinstate it as it is a beautiful willow to work with.
Willow baskets should last for many years and have traditionally been handed down from generation to generation. With our centrally heated homes they need to be given a little more care. Once or twice a year, put your basket outside in the rain - or give it a gentle scrub with some soapy water and a soft kitchen brush. This will clean away the dust and refresh the willows. This is especially good for log baskets which can dry and crack from the heat of a fire. Just be sure to dry the basket thoroughly away from direct sun or heat.
I hope you enjoy your basket.
