Item details

There's a certain mystique in making something by hand thats been done in more or less, the same way for centuries. The hours spent coaxing the natural beauty of the Blackthorn wood grain in the Shillelagh handle. 'Flooding' varnish to achieve a deep, lustrous, preserving finish. Imagining the uses that shillelaghs had in times gone by. They were used as fighting sticks to settle feuds, but craftily disguised as 'Walking Sticks' if the authorities were nearby. Who wouldn't want to make one?

Full description

Blackthorn Walking stick, Knobstick, Shillelagh. Traditionally hand finished with a black shaft and varnished knob handle, fitted with a brass ferrule. Carefully selected and harvested from a sustainable source, then seasoned for four years, before being steam straightened, and lovingly hand finished to a very high standard. In days gone by, the Shillelagh was harvested and seasoned by placing the cut shank up the chimney of a peat burning fireplace. The heat dried the wood, while the smoke from the fire slowly stained the wood black. These days, Shillelagh makers paint the shank to emulate that traditional aesthetic.

40.5 inches (103cm) long, 1 1/8th inch (28mm) diameter under the knob handle, tapering to 1 inch. Fitted with a brass ferrule.

Hand finished to a very high standard.
