Full description
Svefnthorn is a Norse symbol to induce sleep.
The Svefnthorn (Old Norse svefnorn, sleep thorn, pronounced SVEFN-thorn) is a symbol that features in several of the Norse sagas and in folklore.
The ninth spell from the Huld Manuscript, an early modern book of Icelandic spells, references the Svefnthorn. In The Saga of the Volsungs, Odin used a Svefnthorn to sink Brunhild into a slumber from which she would be unable to awaken until someone crossed the formidable circle of fire Odin had kindled around her sleeping body. Sigurd was brave to cross the flames to reach her, and so awoke her.
Each Svefnthorn I hand-make is different. This piece is ceramic and decorated with tones of cobalt blue, copper oxide (green), and a transparent crackle glaze for a rustic aesthetic finish. This piece is at its best in good to strong natural or artificial light.
Mounted on a canvas frame. 20 x 20cm.
