Full description
Shark tooth pendant. A fossilised shark tooth electroformed in copper and pure gold.
A shark's tooth stands as a symbol of male strength. It shows masculinity and strength. Before they were a fashion statement, shark teeth were used as a method of survival. Native Hawaiians called them "leiomano", and they served as weapons and to prepare food. Many surfers wear shark tooth necklaces, not only for style but for superstitious reasons. Wearing a shark tooth is said to prevent sharks from attacking you and protect you while you're at sea.
The first sharks evolved around 300 million years ago. The tooth you see here is approx 50 million years old. Since the beginning, there has been little change in the shark's appearance or teeth. Sharks commonly lose teeth and replace them over their lifetime. It will take a lost tooth 10,000 years to become a fossil. Shark's teeth are unique in several ways. First, they are embedded within the gum of the shark, rather than being rooted within the actual jaw, as is the case with most other toothed animals. This allows them to be replaced more easily, without pain and discomfort to the shark.
