Separate pieces of fabric were marked with acrylic paints and then joined together and overlaid with hand embroidery. Your own interpretation is valid of course but to me it symbolises the struggle, destruction, the tearing apart and coming together of a brave nation.
I was introduced to this technique in an on line course with TextileArtist.org and used it also in my Painted Purple Patchwork piece.
